Great After-School Snacks for Kids: Fueling their Bodies and Minds with Nutritious and Delicious Options

After a long day at school or daycare, all our kids need, in addition to hugs and kisses from us, is a healthy and satisfying snack to refuel their bodies and minds.

However, it can be easy to fall into the trap of providing sugary or processed snacks that are high in calories and low in nutrients. But don't worry, there are plenty of healthy after-school snack options that kids will love!

One great option is fresh fruit. Apples, berries, bananas, and oranges are all great choices that are easy to pack and take on the go. They're also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are essential for children's growth and development.

Another option is to provide a source of protein such as hard-boiled eggs, turkey roll-ups, cheese sticks or yogurt. Protein helps to keep kids full and satisfied for longer periods of time, making it less likely for them to raid the pantry for unhealthy snacks later on.

Vegetables are also a great option as an after-school snack, it may not be the first thing that comes to mind for kids but veggies such as carrot sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, or bell pepper strips are a great way to provide them with important vitamins and minerals. You can also try dipping them in hummus or a low-fat dressing for added flavour.

Homemade snacks are also a great option. Whole wheat crackers with peanut butter or almond butter, homemade trail mix, or homemade granola bars are all great options that can be made in advance and provide a healthy, satisfying snack.

It's also important to stay hydrated after a long day of school, so make sure to have a glass of water or a low-sugar beverage available for your child to enjoy with their snack.

And finally, try adding Fruitly strips to your child’s after-school snacks is another healthy idea. Choose from variety of options, whether it’s our Berry favourites (Blueberry or Strawberry) or Fall-fruit favourites (Plum or Pear). Each strip is full of natural fruits and only that, no added sugar, no preservatives or any other nonsense.
